De politie van Las Vegas heeft Stephen Craig Paddock geïdentificeerd als de man die vanaf de 32ste verdieping van het Mandalay Bay Hotel minstens 59 mensen heeft doodgeschoten en 515 mensen heeft verwond. Het is de dodelijkste schietpartij ooit in de Verenigde Staten.
De 64-jarige man uit het plaatsje Mesquite in Nevada schoot op concertgangers tijdens het Route 91 Harvest Country Festival zondagavond rond 22 uur plaatselijke tijd.
Op video’s en foto’s van de schietpartij is de enorme chaos en het menselijk leed te zien van het automatische geweervuur.
“Hij was helemaal geen wapenliefhebber”, zei zijn broer Eric Paddock tegen CBS News. “Waar heeft hij in vredesnaam die automatische wapens vandaan? Hij heeft geen militaire achtergrond.”
“Hij was een man die in een huis in Mesquite woonde en naar Las Vegas ging om daar te gokken”, vertelt Eric Paddock.
Paddock was gepensioneerd en had geen strafblad, meldt Reuters. In The Washington Post wordt Paddock omschreven als een rustige man die af en toe naar Las Vegas kwam om te gokken of voor een concert. Hij woonde voorheen in Texas en had een jachtvergunning in Alaska.
Paddock was al drie dagen voor de aanval ingecheckt in het Mandalay Bay Hotel met de id-kaart van zijn vriendin. De politie liet al snel weten dat ze niet wordt verdacht van betrokkenheid bij de aanval.
De politie van Las Vegas trof Paddock na de aanval dood aan in zijn hotelkamer, mogelijk door zelfmoord. Ze vonden daar ook zeker 10 geweren, zei sheriff Joseph Lombardo van de Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
Paddock bezat twee vliegtuigen en had een pilotenvergunning, meldt de Today Show. Volgens The Washington Post heeft Paddock gewerkt voor een voorganger van Lockheed Martin dat militaire vliegtuigen bouwt.
Paddock woonde in een buitenwijk van Mesquite in de staat Nevada aan de grens met Arizona op zo'n anderhalf uur rijden van de plek waar de schietpartij plaatsvond, meldt de politie.
"We hebben geen idee welk geloof hij had", zei sheriff Lombardo tegen verslaggevers. IS claimde de schietpartij, maar de politie behandelt de aanval op dit moment niet als terrorisme. Volgens de federale politie FBI is er geen relatie tussen de dader en een internationale terroristische organisatie.
Ook The Daily Mail sprak met broer Eric. Hij zei dat hij en zijn moeder in "shock" waren en "verbluft" toen ze hoorden over de schietpartij. Eric Paddock omschrijft zijn broer als een normale man bij wie iets "geknapt" moet zijn.
President Donald Trump noemt de aanval "een daad van het zuiverste kwaad" en hij prees de politie van Las Vegas voor het kordate optreden. In een verklaring stelt Trump dat de VS "verenigd zijn in verdriet, schrik en rouw."

"My fellow Americans, we are joined together today in sadness, shock, and grief. Last night, a gunman opened fire on a large crowd at a country music concert in Las Vegas, Nevada. He brutally murdered more than 50 people, and wounded hundreds more. It was an act of pure evil.
